Liposuction recovery is usually gentler than people expect, but what you do afterwards has a real effect on your result. Here is what I tell my patients.
The first days
Expect swelling, bruising and some fluid drainage from the small incisions. This is normal. Rest, but don't stay in bed: short, gentle walks several times a day help circulation and reduce the risk of complications.
Compression garment
You will wear a compression garment, usually for several weeks. It controls swelling, supports the tissue as it settles and helps your skin adapt to your new contour. Wear it as instructed, even when it feels inconvenient.
Weeks 1 to 4
- Most patients return to desk work within a week or so
- Avoid strenuous exercise until you have been cleared
- Stay hydrated and eat well to support healing
- Avoid smoking and alcohol, which slow recovery
Swelling and results
Swelling peaks in the first week, then fades gradually. Some residual swelling can last for a few months, so your final shape emerges slowly. Patience is part of the process.
When to call us
Contact the clinic promptly if you notice fever, increasing pain, redness or warmth, unusual discharge, or swelling that is much greater on one side. Calf pain or shortness of breath needs urgent medical attention.
Every patient heals differently, so always follow your own surgeon's instructions above any general guidance.
