A mommy makeover often combines several procedures, such as breast surgery, abdominal contouring and liposuction, in a single operation. That means more healing at once, and planning ahead makes all the difference.
Plan your support before surgery
This is the most important advice I can give. Arrange help with children, meals and housework for at least the first two weeks. For the first weeks you won't be able to lift small children, so have a plan for that.
The first week
- Rest with your upper body slightly raised, and walk gently every few hours
- Expect tightness in the abdomen and tenderness in the chest
- Take medication as prescribed, and keep any drains and dressings as instructed
- Wear your surgical bra and compression garment as directed
Weeks 2 to 6
Energy returns gradually. Many patients feel much better by week two, but internal healing takes longer than it feels. Avoid heavy lifting, intense exercise and any activity that strains your abdomen or chest until you are cleared.
Looking after your scars
Keep incisions clean and protected from the sun. Your surgeon will advise when to start scar care.
Be kind to yourself
Swelling, tiredness and emotional ups and downs are all normal. Final results take several months to appear.
When to call us
Fever, worsening pain, spreading redness, wound opening, sudden swelling on one side, calf pain or breathlessness all need prompt attention.
Always follow your own surgeon's specific instructions, as they are tailored to your procedures and your health.
